New mobility tax from 1 May 2025

Guests travel free of charge on public transport

From 1 May 2025, the province of Salzburg will introduce a mobility levy for overnight guests. The aim of this measure is to further expand local public transport and make tourism more sustainable. It will be used to finance the new public transport guest ticket, which allows all holidaymakers to use all public transport in the Salzburg transport network free of charge during their stay - including ÖBB, Westbahn and cross-border lines.

The fee is initially €0.50 per overnight stay and will be increased to €1.10 from May 2027. It applies to guests aged 15 and over. However, the mobility ticket will be issued for guests from the age of 6 (but no costs will be incurred here). Children under the age of 6 travel for free anyway.

Landlords and landladies are obliged to collect the mobility tax in addition to the local tax and pay it to the authorities. The tax can either be shown separately or included in the price of the overnight stay. The guest ticket is issued electronically via the registration system of the municipalities - ideally before arrival.

In the long term, the mobility levy should contribute to less car traffic, better air quality and a more pleasant stay for everyone. From 2027, part of the revenue will be used specifically for winter tourism, for example for ski bus services in tourist regions.
